Lollipop Baby Monitor REVIEW

by - 9:44 PM

I'll admit it. I'm a clingy and paranoid mama. If my baby is sleeping in her cot while I do something, I like to frequently check on her. One night as my husband and I got to enjoy a movie night in the living room for what felt like the first time since she was born, I couldn't help asking to pause the movie here and there so I could run to check on baby. Yup. We needed a baby camera! Thankfully, the Lollipop Baby Monitor came into my life. Read on as I break down my favourite features.

Lollipop Baby Monitor Review

Design
First off, packaging! Look at how beautifully packaged it is. The box design is sleek and chic. No need to say more.
Lollipop Baby Monitor Packaging

This camera is unique as it is designed like a lollipop, hence the name. It comes in three colors - pink, green, and blue. I had to pick the pink one of course! Perhaps it's not everyone's cup of tea if you'd prefer more sleek typical camera looks like those that come in white, silver or black. But I was perfectly happy with my pink lollipop camera for my baby girl.

It's made of non-toxic silicone so it's not a problem (just in case you have a baby who's able to climb and lick it). It's designed to easily bend and twist to your desired set-up.

Installation

Installation is very easy. Even for someone like me who is slightly technologically challenged. Unboxing this will show you the camera, the charger, the twig camera wall mount, the clip, and the wire guides. Personally, I wanted to wrap the camera at the corner of her cot but also wanted the freedom to transfer this when I please so I opted not to use the twig stand and wire guides for now. You can twist the camera's leg to make it stand or use the wall mount if you prefer.

Clockwise: Looping the camera through the clip; twig/branch-like figure that can be used as a wall mount; wire guides; plug/charger.

Without even needing to read the instruction manual, you can easily loop the camera through the clip, bend it and hook it to your desired position, and plug it in. Download the app, set it up, and you're good to go.

Live HD Feed

The live HD feed by far might be the most impressive thing about this camera. The camera functions via WiFi. And because we also have surveillance cameras by a reputable brand installed in the house that functions via WiFi, we could immediately compare the difference. While live viewing via our surveillance camera app can often have a slight lag, there was no notable lag with the Lollipop.
Screenshot from app when the camera was installed on the play pen.

The first week where we had the Lollipop, we set it up on baby's play pen. Baby is still roomed in with us and we didn't have any planned movie nights coming up. Can't fault the view at all as you can see that the camera caught the whole play pen area so you could see what she's up to. While having it set up here, my husband would check on the app while he was on a lunch break at work. And this is how we further confirmed the impeccable quality of the camera's live HD feed as my husband could watch baby play while at his workplace and there was still no lag. Note that you can also opt to only allow live streaming when the app and camera share the same WiFi network.

Day and Night Vision
Upon installation, we immediately saw how clear the camera's view is. We also got to view its impressive night vision. The first week, when it was installed in the play pen, the lights were all off and blacked out at night but its night vision was impeccable. Sorry I don't have a screenshot for you. Of course having it installed in the room with a night light was no problem.

Alerts and Playback
Lollipop prides itself for its true crying detection with a 96% accuracy rate. To date, it has in fact only alerted us when baby is crying and not when baby is making other light sounds or even when she's laughing. You can also control the sensitivity as per your preference.

The app allows you to review the timeline on the camera for what seems to be a week's worth of memory. It also saves a couple of day's worth of 'events' in the Inbox tab. In the events in the screenshot below, the camera alerted me on baby's crying. The app notifies you on your phone as it's happening and then it saves it as an 'event' on your app. You can go back to past events for a replay and you can even download the video. The saved events only stay in your app for a few days though. You can probably purchase an upgrade for that, but I'm more than happy with the free version.

Additional Features

Here's a few cool features I did not expect a baby monitor to include. First, the camera has a built-in speaker which allows it to have a microphone-like feature so you can speak to your baby which really makes it like an intercom. To be honest, this feature hasn't worked for me as it says it can't connect to the camera - not sure if I'm doing something wrong. I'll have to figure it out sometime. Second, you can add several cameras and monitor it with one app - say for example, you had 2 kids in separate bedrooms with 2 different cameras.

An additional feature which I love is the camera's ability to play music and soothing sounds - with a choice of 6 classical tracks and 6 sounds. Where was this camera when my baby was a newborn?? The white noise and womb sound options would have been so helpful. You can also control the volume as well as set a timer for the music to stop playing.

Another awesome feature is the Smart Detection ability which allows you to draw a square in your selected area in the camera's view and set up 'crossing detection' where you get alerted if baby crosses that line. This is especially helpful if you've got a toddler who is able to climb out.

There is an add-on feature where you can purchase a Lollipop sensor to monitor the air quality, temperature, and humidity in your kid's room and monitor it via the app.

One last thing: it has a "share" option where you can opt to restrict sharing to someone. Say for example, you have a baby sitter and you want to give her limited access - you certainly can control it via the app.

Cost

This costs AU$229 on Amazon. You can certainly opt for cheaper or more expensive baby monitors as there is a wide price range available in the market. However, at the price of the Lollipop camera, I certainly can't fault it for its quality and useful features. If you find these features handy, then it's worth the investment.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, I would honestly say that the Lollipop baby monitor is worth the price because of the good quality, handy features, and ease of the app. My favourite features are its exceptional live monitoring and clear camera view, the ability to play sounds/music, and its smart detection/crossing alerts.

What do you think of this baby monitor? What do you find most impressive?

  1. It's such a cute camera and I like that it's so portable! Our baby monitor is one of the traditional camera ones with the little bases, it sits away from the cot and can't be up close like that. But we loved the intercom feature on it and that we could get it to play music - although sometimes I did hit the wrong button in the middle of the night when trying to pickup the video screen and set the music off haha! It's great there is so much choice around for cameras now :)

Hope you are having a lovely weekend! We had a (small, due to restrictions) party for my son's birthday yesterday, it was really fun :)
