Cebu Restaurants: Arano's

by - 12:35 AM

I don't know if it's just me but it seems like there are only a few restaurants in Cebu that specialize in Spanish cuisine. Compared to its more commercialized counterparts, I'm betting that the majority of the city population actually do not know where to find Arano's.

Simply drive to the Guadalupe area until you reach Guadalupe Elementary School. Across from that, you will see a very small corner, with a large sign that says, "FAIRLANE VILLAGE." Enter, turn right, and go straight. On the right side, you will find a small door with a small signage.

Don't worry, the cobwebs are only there because it was around Halloween when I last visited. Obviously, the signage is barely visible and the outside looks like it's a residential house - that's because it is. It's one of those residences/houses-converted-into-a-restaurant hidden gems in the Guadalupe area. Not to worry, you will definitely know when you get there because the street usually looks like this:
And yes, all those cars lined up are there to visit Arano's. I once met a restaurant owner who told me, "It doesn't matter where you are located. If you serve good food, people will find you."
Unfortunately, the place was too packed (as usual) that I wasn't able to take decent shots of the interior so this photo will have to do. They have a tiny indoor seating area (which we never seem to be able to sit in because it's always full) and they have a garden area - which although isn't as well designed, is perfectly fine because you're there for the food anyway. And the food is delicious.
Arano's Taco de Pescao (Fish taco) - P100
Let's start with the fish taco. I have never tasted anything like this before. It's hard to describe what the fish tastes like - a little spicy, a little salty, it's such a great surprise, my eyebrows definitely shot up when I first tried it. Never expected a fish taco to taste this good.
Arano's Beef Tenderloin Tips (spicy) - P195
Arano's Beef Tenderloin (with pimientos and fries) - P230
For our main dishes, the boyfriend and I ordered the beef tenderloin tips and beef tenderloin, which are our personal favorites here - yes, we order these dishes every single time. And they often run out of these too. It seems that everyone orders the beef tenderloin.

We had plain rice during this visit but other times, we ordered paella. I don't really like paella, but Arano's paella is a different story! It's too good not to appreciate. For dessert, we each had a slice of Crema de Mangga (P15) - the slice was pretty tiny but it's incredibly cheap too. This was actually just mango float and who doesn't love mango float?

The service isn't spectacular as the waiters (who give the impression of being male house help by day and waiter by night) have a hard time catching up with the number of customers but the food is well worth the wait. Definitely coming back here (again and again) as my boyfriend absolutely loves the food here and he's a picky eater so that definitely tells you that this place is more than worth visiting!

One last thing, the Spanish owner is always there to greet you and asks before you leave, "Busog?" (Translated to: Are you full? Which really means, have you eaten to your heart's content?) Yes. :)
