Galt Farm Playnest Review

by - 3:50 PM

I first heard about the Galt Playnest when it was recommended by a couple of popular mummy YouTubers. The toy really appealed to me so I was quite keen to get it for my baby. It describes itself as a fabric covered inflatable with 8 play activities. The box states that it's suitable from 0 months. By the time my online order arrived in Australia, baby is now 5-months-old. Read on to find out how she likes it.

Where To Buy It

A quick online search showed that this item is actually not commonly sold in Australia and I only had a few options. I chose to buy it from www.ozgameshop.com at $51.69 (although the price has now increased online) because the price difference when compared to other sites was just ridiculous. Especially in consideration that shipping was free. However, even though the site name says "Oz", they're actually based in the UK and not in Australia. At the peak of the covid 19 pandemic restrictions, this took a little over a month to arrive. It didn't help that the parcel doesn't have a tracking ID either but their return/refund policy sounded alright so I wasn't too worried about that. I was however, getting worried that baby had far outgrown this toy by the time it arrived.

Play Activities

The playnest comes in a farm theme with the farm animals having different tactile sensory features. The pig has a crinkle nose. The puppy has a "peep-o door" which means it a crinkle page that can be flipped like a book page. The sheep's head is furry. The duck's beak squeaks. The cow's face has a velvety feel. The bunny is on top of "peep-o cabbages". The boy is driving a car whose wheel is smooth and shiny. The horse has a cord tail that baby can pull on. The horse's tail in particular is a favourite of mine and my baby's. Baby can pull on the tail itself and the end of the tail has individual ribbon strands which stimulate her fine motor skills and pincer grasp.

The Set Up

Even though the inflatable ring is circular, once you put the fabric on, the hole in the middle appears to have a slightly triangular shape which I feel helps support baby's back. The box says that it "supports baby during rest and play" and you can easily see this as baby lays back, sits up, or even kneels and leans forward. At this time, my baby is actually already able to sit without support for up to a minute at a time. This toy supports her as she does that. But I also see that it's really strengthening her leg muscles because as she is sitting there, the toy features that attract her encourage her to move and reach forward. Because of this, it also burns a lot of that energy as she has fun in the playnest.

Safety

For younger babies who are less physically active, this playnest will keep your baby safely preoccupied while she sits supported or lays there, giving you a bit of a break. However, with a very active baby, you certainly have to be on standby because (if you watch my upcoming vlog) she can very well manage to lunge out and escape. You certainly have to make sure that she lands softly and safely when she does. Baby's weight as she moves around might also possibly move the playnest so you definitely can't expect the playnest to stay in the exact same spot in this scenario.

My Thoughts

I wish I had this toy for her earlier. I'm sure she would have started to enjoy it at 3-4 months old. At 5 months old, she still enjoys this toy though - from touching and pulling on the different play activities - and also mouthing the crinkle pages. The first two days that we had this toy, all she wanted to do was get out of there and maybe play with the tags. By the third and fourth day, she absolutely warmed up to it and loved being in there. She can spend up to an hour there because when she gets tired then she sits back and takes a break. If your baby doesn't like this toy at first, make sure you don't give up straight away.

One vlogger stated that this toy helped her child sit on his own early. While my baby has already been enjoying sitting unsupported for up to a minute, I am certain that this will improve her leg strength. While inside the playnest, she easily moves from sitting to kneeling to pushing herself up in an attempt to stand as well as lunge forward. In fact, she has pushed herself up and somewhat sat on the sides of the playnest already. She also remembers this newfound ability as when she is on the mat next to her dad, she will put her hands on her dad's knees and push herself up (the same way she does in the playnest) in an attempt to stand. I won't be surprised if she stands herself up in no time.

Close supervision is required when your baby is highly active and able to get out of the playnest. For $51.69, I find this toy very worth it because she enjoys it, it's washable, and is travel-friendly (which means I can take it with us when visiting her grandfather's house).

I honestly feel like this is even better than a jumperoo/jumper and is only costs half the price. In contrast to a jumeroo, you don't have to worry about the safety of the harness setup, she is not strapped in, you don't have to worry about the placement of her feet on the floor, nor have to worry about hip dysplasia. So far my baby is loving the playnest and so am I.

  3. It looks like a cute toy and it's nice to have a place they can happily play while you do something like get dinner ready, haha! :) It's tricky when they are so little to amuse them when you need to do something!

Hope that you are having a good weekend :) Since some of the restrictions have been relaxed in Brisbane we were able to enjoy a picnic yesterday! With social distancing of course, it was so nice to enjoy some time in the park.

  9. Awe how fun! We found an activity table at a consignment shop when Viviene was about 6 months. It ended up being the best thing! I want to buy like three more for future children so we have back-ups if something happens to #1. Haha, that's how much I loved it! Link here: Bright Star Walker
